HQ APEX 3 Review
By Mike Reedy March 7, 2011

Flyers Eric L,  Mike R, and Neil B
Its been a few weeks since I received a HQ Apex III 7.5m kite.  I intended to do a review weeks ago,  but a mishap pumping up a buggy tire left me out of commission for a few weeks,  then we had ridiculous winds here in North Texas for the past few weeks that also prevented us from flying this kite safely.

The bag is sturdy and a quality build.  It is no frills and plenty big to fit the kite and bar inside if so desired.

The bar is also quality and the lines are numbered on the bar and on the kite so setting up wasn't a problem.  I'm a fixed bridle guy mostly but having seen HQ's Chris Schultz glide around effortlessly at the DeadBirdBuggyBash flying an Apex 3,  I decided to try flying this one myself.   Maybe it will help me with my buggy skills.

Winds during the review flight were light and variable.  There were moments of absolutely no wind to several minutes of gusts up to 7 or 8 mph.  it did not take much wind for the 7.5m to be at home.

Flying:   This kite is solid and predictable.  We had no issues with it other than a poorly placed leash (our fault) grabbing and pulling the quick release a couple times.  We weren't sure what was doing it at first so it was a bit frustrating until we figure out what was happening.

Note:  This kite does not come with a leash.  I used one I had already.  I'm not sure of the need for it in our situation.

It had quick response on the turns and sits where you want it to sit.  The wind had started to pick up where buggying would have been possible,  but about that time,  this park filled up with little league baseball players practicing.  So to be on the side of safety we opted to avoid the buggys this time.

I will add buggy information as soon as we can get a buggy session in with this kite.

The Apex III is great quality and reasonably priced.  There are 4 sizes to choose from.   3m, 5m, 7.5m, and 10m.  Depending on where you live and the main winds you should have all the kite range you need with just 2 sizes.
